Analytics becomes valuable when it helps you make better decisions. Tracking every possible interaction is not the goal. The goal is identifying the actions that show whether your marketing and website are actually contributing to business growth.
For most growing businesses, the foundation should include Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager. GA4 helps analyse user behaviour and marketing performance, while GTM makes it easier to deploy and manage tracking without constantly changing website code.
The first events to track should be actions connected directly to business value. These may include contact form submissions, booked calls, purchases, WhatsApp clicks, phone clicks, downloads, or requests for quotations.
Secondary engagement events can provide additional context. Tracking important CTA clicks, video engagement, scroll depth, and key page interactions can help identify where users are engaging or dropping off.
Campaign attribution is another important area. UTM parameters should be used consistently across Google, Meta, LinkedIn, email campaigns, and other channels so that traffic sources can be analysed correctly.
Advertising platforms should also receive their own conversion signals through tools such as Google Ads conversion tracking, Meta Pixel, LinkedIn Insight Tag, and other relevant platform tags.
The objective is not to create the biggest analytics setup. It is to build a reliable measurement system that clearly answers three questions: where did the visitor come from, what did they do, and did that activity create business value?
